North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the U.S. states. The state is divided into 100 counties. The capital is Raleigh. The most populous municipality is Charlotte, which is the third largest banking center in the United States after New York City and San Francisco. The top 10 cities are Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Cary, Wilmington, High Point and Greenville. North Carolina is very unique as it has ‘zones’ that are very well-known and identifiable. These include Metrolina: Charlotte–Gastonia–Salisbury; The Research Triangle: Raleigh–Durham–Chapel Hill and The Piedmont Triad: Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point.
