New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state by area but the 11th-most populous and the most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. New Jersey lies entirely within the combined statistical areas of New York City and Philadelphia and is the third-wealthiest state by median household income as of 2016.
New Jersey can be thought of as five regions, based upon natural geography and population concentration. Northeastern New Jersey, the Gateway Region, lies closest to Manhattan in New York City, and up to a million residents commute daily into the city to work via automobile or mass transit. The United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of New Jersey was 8,958,013 on July 1, 2015. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that New Jersey’s gross state product in 2010 was $487 billion. New Jersey’s estimated taxpayer burden in 2015 was $59,400 per taxpayer.
